Hockey is a very physical sport that requires strength, quick reflexes and great fitness. Like many other sports, hockey also requires a strong mental endurance that can help good players become great. Hockey captains combine between elite physical fitness and psychological strength. Captains are the cornerstone of any team and they are in charge of making themselves and their teammates better – all the time. Below you will find some of the main characteristics a great hockey captain contains – some of many that make a great hokey leader.

Mental Strength

While there is nothing wrong with a good goal celebration, a good captain knows to stay humble. He or she can enjoy with the team and celebrate the W, but must keep a steady, mature but strong presence that keeps everyone mission oriented. This isn’t easy, especially, when everyone is celebrating a win, but it is a component when trailing and working on a comeback win. One must not let the emotions kick in and keep cool. A captain knows to focus on the game and remain focused.

When the captain can show this kind of maturity, the team will follow suit. Bad emotions can be channeled to hope and belief to get the team working together. A captain will not let a bad situation get the best of him, and his teammates will respect him for keeping his head in the game in the face of adversity.

Grow from mistakes

Many players use the same move all the time, even when it fails. The captain knows that mistakes will be made and that he or she must fix them to succeed. The ability to learn from mistakes is a key element a captain can show his or her team, and must share the knowledge with teammates whenever possible. It isn’t so much dwelling on mistakes as it is learning from them, and that is extremely important for any athlete.
